The therapeutic benefits of riding.
Horse riding can have such a real and lasting difference to the lives of these children. Physical benefits occur as a result of the movement of the horse, which helps to improve the riders balance, posture and co-ordination. Our riders can also gain in strength and flexibility.
Here’s an excerpt from a letter from the parent of one of our riders.
‘Of all the activities that E does, horse riding is her favourite and the one thing that she seems so happy and natural doing….. At a recent visit to Great Ormond Street we were told that there had been an improvement in the muscle strength in areas of her lower body. When asked what had changed since the last assessment, the only thing that had was that she had started riding regularly.’
Our riding sessions can also lead to increased communication skills, confidence and self-esteem.
‘T never used to talk about his school day or other activities, yet every Friday afternoon we get a detailed report on his lesson. Horse riding has made such a difference to him, his confidence has grown, and he now refers to it as his talent, finally something he can be proud of.’
It’s very rewarding when we hear from the teachers that a child who is unsettled at school, is calm and attentive when they come riding.
